Peetah Morgan Of Morgan Heritage Dies At 46
In San Juan, Puerto Rico, the family of Peter Anthony Morgan, the lead vocalist and a founding member of the renowned reggae group Morgan Heritage, announced his passing at the age of 46.
The family has requested privacy during this time and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support, though they have not disclosed the cause of his death.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness of Jamaica expressed his profound sadness on social media, highlighting the significant loss Morgan’s death represents to both Jamaica and the reggae music scene.
Peetah Morgan, as he was affectionately known, was the progeny of the famous Jamaican reggae artist Denroy Morgan. In 1994, he established Morgan Heritage with his four siblings, achieving significant acclaim including a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 2016 for their work “Strictly Roots.”
The legacy of storytelling through music, particularly noted in reggae and country genres, was something Peetah and his brother Roy “Gramps” Morgan, who relocated to Tennessee, often emphasized. The Morgan family aimed to bridge cultural gaps and share the narrative of struggle and resilience through their music.
Peetah’s siblings, Una Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan, and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan, also played integral roles in the formation and success of Morgan Heritage, contributing to the band’s distinctive sound and global recognition.
